Fasching is a Catholic festival that marks the start of Lent, the forty days Jesus spent in the wilderness. In Germany, there are parades, people dressing up, beautiful floats, and more.
In January, the towns elect their Fasching prince and princess, they choose how parts of Fasching will be celebrated. Fasching used to be only for men, so the women protested and now get to dress up and take power in the city on the Thursday, the week before Lent. They walk around and cut any man’s tie off. On the Monday after that, Rose Monday, there is a huge parade with floats, clowns, and bands. The people in the parade throw small gifts to the audience.
