In Nigeria There Is a festival that they call the Mmanwe Festival. This festival is annual witch means that it happens once a year. It was supposed to be a craftsmen day to display there work like masks.
But today this festival is not about masks. Nigerians still have this spectacular ceremonies in December in the south of the country, witchit is held in the province of Anambra. This masks are based on animals. The tribal people lived near wild creatures. On the mask they would put for example the spots of leopards and zebra’s strips. For these people there are secret societies that choose certain animals. They believe that if they look like the animal they will be as brave as the animal and as wise as the animal. Nigerians used to believe that masks allowed them to be like there ancestors. Today the festival is preserve the old masks making. It is sad that they no longer make masks. Today the festival of high light is a day were they show rare masks.
